Plunging down rock faces on your mountain bike, tearing through class 4 rapids in a canoe, flying across the ocean in a sail boat and trailblazing your way over mountains with all your gear on your back sounds really cool (AND IT IS!) But you have to start somewhere.

Base Camp is where to start! Base Camp is an introduction to trip camping that requires no previous experience or skill. Before arriving you choose one of four skills you would like to learn:

  • Mountain Biking: Using great beginner trails off of Highway 4 near Bear Valley CA, the campers are taught basic mountain biking skills to give them the technique and knowledge to take on more advanced trails.
  • White-Water Canoeing: The Stanislaus and Mokelumne rivers are the setting used to instruct the campers on basic canoe instruction, as well as some swift water rescue and river safety.
  • Sailing: You will find the sailing campers cruising back and forth across beautiful Lake Alpine practicing beginner sailing techniques, essential knots and water safety. You may even get to camp out on an island in the middle of the lake!
  • Backpacking: The young men in the backpacking module get to experience the beautiful back country above Bear Valley CA. They get the opportunity to learn basic map reading and topography skills, outdoor cooking and trekking through beautiful aspects of God's creation. 
The first part of the week you learn the basics of your chosen skill under the instruction and supervision of experts. After the basics are learned each module leaves for a trip during which you are able to put your new skills into practice. By the end of the week you will feel prepared to handle yourself in the outdoors, and you will be ready to tackle another of our one of a kind adventure trip camping challenges. Most gear is provided with some exceptions.

Base Camp is held near beautiful lake Alpine located at over 5000 feet in elevation in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California. Modules will eat and sleep as a unit both in camp, and while out on their module trip.

Camp-wide games and fun campfire programs each evening are just a few of the highlights of this great summer camp. Base camp offers the small trip feel with the big camp fun! This is a great chance to bring a friend so you can learn your chosen skill together!
